A recent study conducted by Invisalign endeavored to find out why people want to straighten their teeth and how their lives change once those treatments are over. They worked with Harris Poll to talk to more than two thousand people over the age of eighteen, to find how straight teeth affects confidence and impacts every area of their life, including their careers, their social lives, and their individual happiness. Here are some of the most important finding this survey reported.
1. 70% report that one change in appearance boosted their confidence.
What does this mean? It means that they could change nothing else about the way that they looked and they would still feel more confident. Straightening teeth is a great way to boost confidence, without having to make any other changes to your appearance.
2. A large portion reported that confidence made them happier, more attractive, and more successful.
About 60% of respondents said that with straighter teeth, they were perceived as being happier. About half said that they were see as more attractive and more successful, and 40% said that people thought they were smarter. How does straighter teeth impact how we are perceived? People who smile and have straight teeth are naturally seen to be friendlier and more attractive. We view these people as confident and therefore ascribe them more confident attributes.
3. Almost every respondent said straighter teeth was an integral part of their confidence.
Straight teeth might not be the sole seed for your confidence, but 92% of respondents to the survey reported that they were much more confident after having straightened their teeth than they were before straightening their teeth. For those who struggle with a confident smile because they do not like their teeth, getting braces or Invisalign could significantly boost their confidence.
4. Most said that it was among the most important things they have done.
Nearly 80% of people said that straightening their teeth was one of the most important treatments they have ever received. This means that the vast majority saw their treatment not just as valuable, but as one of the most valuable things they have ever done. This could significantly change the way that you think about your appearance and how you are perceived by others. These statistics prove that having a great smile doesn’t just affect how others see you, but how you see yourself.
5. Most said that straighter teeth gave them the confidence to do something they would not have done before.
Again, about 80% of people who responded to the survey said that they were able to do something after having their teeth straightened that they never would have done prior to having their teeth straightened. The confidence that is given when you have a happy, straight smile is something that cannot be underestimated and cannot be replaced. If there is something that you have been holding off doing, straightening your teeth could be a great way to tackle it.
6. About a third said straighter teeth helped them achieve a goal.
Beyond the goal of simply getting a more confident smile, they were able to achieve an additional goal that they would not have been able to reach had they not straightened their teeth. This might have been finding a long-term relationship, applying for a new job, or even starting their own business. If you have been holding back on working on a goal, first getting the straighter teeth you have always wanted is a good place to start.
7. Three quarters said that they could tie at least one positive thing back to having straighter teeth.
75% of people said that they had had at least one positive experience related to their teeth straightening. If you already know that you want straighter teeth, isn’t this impetus enough to actually go out and have it done? Having a more positive life is always a good thing and you can make it happen for yourself by having your teeth straightened. Because there are so many different ways to get straighter teeth these days, there really is no reason not to do it.
8. Teeth are second only to weight when it comes to things people feel insecure about.
How your teeth look could be a major insecurity for you. Even if you otherwise like how you look, you might be embarrassed by crooked teeth. How your teeth look might even have been something to be teased about when you were in school. It is more common for someone to feel insecure about how their teeth look than they are to feel insecure about their personality or their height!
